Thermal vs Blockout Curtains: Warmth, Darkness — or Both?

Insulation and light-blocking are two different jobs. Some fabrics do just one — but our heavier blockout and double curtains do both. Here's how to match the right option to each room this winter.

Controls heat

Thermal / Insulated

Built to manage temperature — heavier coated or lined fabric traps a pocket of air against the glass to help keep warmth in. Our Vienna blockout curtains are made with thermal insulation in mind.

  • Designed for insulation & lower energy bills
  • Warmer in winter, cooler in summer
  • Coated fabric also blocks light — a bonus
Controls light

Blockout

Built to block light and give privacy. The coated fabric also helps slow heat loss — but insulation is a bonus, not its main purpose.

  • Designed for deep room darkening & privacy
  • Best for bedrooms, media rooms, shift workers
  • Helps reduce heat loss as a secondary benefit
Want warmth AND darkness? Layered double curtains (blockout + sheer), or a blockout curtain with thermal lining, give you both — our team matches the right combination to each room.
The science of a warm window

How thermal & insulated coverings keep heat in

Do blinds and curtains really keep heat in? Yes — when they're the right fabric and fitted tightly. Here's how it works.

Trap a pocket of air

Layered or lined fabric holds a still layer of air against the cold glass — the same principle as double glazing.

Seal the edges

A made-to-measure fit — plus side channels or a pelmet — closes the gaps where draughts sneak in and warm air escapes.

Lower the bill

Less heat lost means your heater runs less. Insulated window coverings can meaningfully cut winter energy use.

Common questions

Thermal & insulated window coverings — FAQ

Do blinds and curtains really keep heat in? +
Yes. Bare windows can lose up to 40% of a room's heat. Layered or lined fabric traps a pocket of still air against the glass, and a tight, made-to-measure fit stops draughts — together that noticeably reduces heat loss in winter.
What's the difference between thermal and blockout? +
Thermal/insulated coverings are designed to control temperature (insulation), while blockout is designed to block light and give privacy. Blockout fabric does help slow heat loss, but that's a secondary benefit — for maximum warmth, choose a lined or double curtain, or ask us about thermal-lined blockout.
Which is the warmest option for winter? +
Layered double curtains (blockout + sheer) are our warmest single window solution, especially with a pelmet to seal the top gap. Lined/dimout curtains and well-fitted blockout roller blinds with side channels also perform strongly.
Are blockout curtains good for winter and energy efficiency? +
They help. Heavy coated blockout fabric slows heat transfer through the glass and blocks draughts when fitted tightly. If insulation is your main goal rather than darkness, pair blockout with a lining or layer it with a second curtain.
Do you measure and install across Sydney? +
Yes — we offer a free on-site measure & quote across the Sydney metro (Inner West, North Shore, Eastern Suburbs and more), then custom-make everything factory-direct with fast NSW-wide delivery.
